National Asset Management’s networks are protected from both data loss and system downtime. This involves both routine procedures performed on an ongoing basis and nonroutine steps taken to prevent or recover from unexpected downtime.
NAM’s system administrator is responsible to cover:
• Hard disk subsystem failure
• Power failure
• Systems software failure
• Accidental or malicious use of deletion or modification commands
• Destructive viruses
• Natural disasters
• Theft or sabotage
NAM’s catastrophic recovery procedure covers:
• A plan to acquire replacement hardware
• A communication plan
• A list of people to be contacted in the event of a disaster
• Instructions for contacting the people involved in the response to the disaster
• Information about who owns the administration of the plan
NAM’s disaster recovery plan ensures that we can quickly recover our data if it is lost. We have developed backup and restore strategies with appropriate resources and personnel, and tested them.
NAM’s disaster recovery plan ensures that all our systems and data can be restored to normal operation quickly in the event of a natural disaster (such as a fire) or a technical disaster (such as a two-disk failure in a RAID-5 array). When we created our disaster recovery plan, we identified all of the actions that must occur in response to a catastrophic event.
NAM has thoroughly tested our backup and recovery plan. When testing, we look for vulnerable areas by simulating as many possible failure scenarios as we can. We test our recovery plan by simulating the occurrence of a catastrophic event.
NAM’s disaster recovery strategy addresses the following issues:
• Current medium to which we send the backup
• Set backups manually and schedule them to be done automatically
• Automated backups are verified that they successfully occurred
• Backups are schedule for validity and functionality
• Time length of stored backups
• Time will it take to restore from the most recent backup is 1/2 hour
• Where we store the backups
• Who the appropriate people are to have access
• Three additional people know the proper passwords and procedures to perform backups and, if necessary, restore the system
As part of NAM’s disaster recovery plan, we also do the following:
• Microsoft Windows Event Viewer on a daily basis to check both the system log and application log on your production servers for any errors or warnings
• Maintain an up-to-date Windows Emergency Repair disk or Automated System Recovery (ASR) set for each server
• Ensure that all servers are protected with adequate antivirus software
• Keep the software up-to-date with the latest virus signature files
• Use the automatic update feature of your antivirus application to keep the virus signatures current
